Amaltari is on the far side of the Narayani, a drive of about an hour and a quarter from Bharatpur. Two communities live here: Tharu farmers in painted mud houses, and Bote families, who have fished and ferried on the river for generations.

A local guide from the village walks you through the fields and lanes and into the small Tharu museum. In the late morning you go out on the river with Bote boatmen. Lunch is home-cooked with a host family, usually rice, lentils, vegetables from the fields and fish from the river.
