Bis Hajari Tal, the “twenty thousand lakes”, is a maze of ponds and marshes in the Barandabhar forest, half an hour from Bharatpur. In the early morning the water is still, the birds are active and the forest is quiet.
You walk the trails between the lakes with a local guide and a pair of binoculars, stopping at the open water to scan for storks, herons, kingfishers and, in winter, ducks. You may also see deer and monkeys, and mugger crocodiles basking on the banks.
